The students of NYUAD Engineers for Social Impact @nyuad_efsi learn that civic infrastructure isn’t just about technological solutions, it’s about how people use, perceive, and interact in a space. This year, we continued to explore, often neglected or inadequate, but essential civic infrastructure: street lighting, water & sanitation, and emergency systems like firefighting for an urban village. Students took the time to understand how to build on what already exists. Through a week filled with neighbourhood walks, listening to residents' needs and speaking with local experts, they began to think of ways to design, operate, maintain and manage these systems. While some students worked on managing the newly installed street-lighting infrastructure, others explored community-led firefighting strategies. The ultimate goal was to understand how infrastructure networks can grow incrementally, truly serving and integrating with the needs of everyday life. Los días 9 y 10 de mayo nos encontraremos para compartir el deseo de tejer vínculos entre procesos comunitarios del oriente y la ladera de Cali, por medio del reconocimiento de nuestros saberes y la construcción colectiva desde nuestros territorios. As we explore the hidden aquaculture ponds in the Mithi River, we are fascinated by the indigenous practices responsible for the care and maintenance of these low-tech engineering marvels. The students of NYUAD Engineers for Social Impact, Dharavi Fishermen’s Association, Dharavi Koli Jamat and urbz are exploring ways to ease the labour-intensive maintenance routine of the ponds, a growing challenge amidst the highly polluted urban context. The ponds are one focus area of ‘The Garden of Festivities’ - a project that attempts to unite livelihood concerns with an ecological imagination that grows from the Kolis collective, ancestral knowledge and expertise. The students tried to dig deeper into understanding more about pond cleaning and management, tidal patterns and environmental shifts, evolving fishing practices and economic reality, cultural identity and community. Photo 1 - Wilson Koli takes the students around his pond, which he struggles to protect from the garbage and pollution of the Mithi River Photos 2,3- Following Wilson on his usual route through the mangroves to his pond Photo 4 - The Fisherman’s Association of Dharavi Koliwada shares more about their fishing practices and gives feedback on the Garden of Festivities project Photos 5 - The students participated in several discussions with the fishermen and studied three different ponds in which the Kolis still fish. The many conversations with the fishermen led to the realisation that standard engineering solutions are often futile for delicate nature-based livelihood practices. Photo 6 - Yatish Koli, a fisherman who gave a tour of his pond, sings lores of the “Khambadev”, a local deity who protects the village, as he explains how the sluice gates work to manage the inflow and outflow of water in the ponds. Photo 7- Ramesh Koli, one of the eldest, most active and most experienced fishermen in Koliwada, explains the use of fishing nets.
