Competition or co-creation?

How design competitions waste time, money and potential. (The Hindu 23.06.19)

Exhibits showcased proposed solutions that addressed existing issues and needs. The Design proposals were presented through drawings and models. The residents got to learn more about how their project ideas had developed and also got a chance to express their thoughts about them. Our team spoke with each of these 200 visitors, carefully explaining the projects and noting down all the feedback they had to give. We also interviewed many residents with specialised backgrounds, knowledge and experience. When larger groups visited, like the women’s self-help groups, we would gather for a spontaneous group discussion. These in-depth conversations helped validate the importance of the identified projects and yielded more information and knowledge about them.

All feedback was noted and put up immediately and the exhibits transformed into multiple dialogues across the neighbourhood.

SEGUNDA SESIÓN presenta las experiencias de organizaciones comunales, luchas sociales y colectivos que buscan transgredir con sus prácticas las dinámicas deslocalizas y hegemónicas en la producción del espacio.

Abrimos el espacio para conversar sobre estas lógicas. Invitados en el espacio @prosadelmundo . Ante una actividad que responde a las dinámicas del mercado y que reproduce las lógicas occidentales, coloniales y patriarcales, que alternativas podemos re-pensar para contrarrestar estas dinámicas desde el diseño comunal y el apoyo mutuo?. La primera sesión presenta un marco teórico ontológico alternativo consolidado desde la periferia del conocimiento para una practica comunal de la arquitectura. La segunda sesión presenta las experiencias de organizaciones comunales, luchas sociales y colectivos que buscan transgredir con sus prácticas las dinámicas deslocalizas y hegemónicas en la producción del espacio.

Faced with an activity that responds to market dynamics and reproduces western, colonial and patriarchal logics, what alternatives can we rethink to counteract these dynamics from communal design and mutual support? The first session presents an alternative ontological theoretical framework consolidated from the periphery of knowledge for a communal practice of architecture. The second session presents the experiences of communal organizations and collectives that seek to transgress with their practices the dislocalized and hegemonic dynamics in the production of space.

We are organising a neighborhood-level event in Dharavi Koliwada, an urban fishing village in Mumbai. The idea is to dialogue with as many inhabitants as possible about planned neighbourhood improvements as part of the ABCD project. The event will include an exhibition of civic interventions, workshops and walkthroughs, all geared to maximise community participation.

We need people with a hands-on approach and a willingness to engage. While we welcome people from diverse fields experience in photography, writing and managing events in encouraged.
