The Shapes of Third Places

In The Shapes of Third Places series, we delve into the work of the three student groups of GDI 2025, exploring how their creative and insightful approaches have helped us gain new perspectives on Third Places.
The Shapes of Third Places
urbz was invited by KISD (Köln International School of Design) to conceive and animate a week-long intensive design workshop with students from all over the world, as part of the GDI program. The Global Design Initiative is a joint venture among five globally-oriented Art and Design Universities and Institutes:
- LASALLE University of the Arts, Singapore
- Musashino Art University, Tokyo
- SCID, Taipei
- Central Saint Martins, London
- KISD, Cologne
Every year, GDI brings together students from each university for an intensive, thematic workshop, which aims to investigate intercultural learning, to understand the use of narrative in design, the use of cultural artefacts, behaviours and places as source material for design intervention, and to gain insight into the values, aspirations and concerns of a new generation of designers.
This year’s workshop, co-designed by urbz, focused on the theme of Third Places: Designing Transformations for Convivial Encounters. Held from February 15th to 21st, 2025, in Cologne, the workshop aimed to explore and support spaces of unconventional interactions in the city. Through a series of site visits, observation exercices and collaborative interventions, participants engaged with three inspiring local initiatives, uncovering and realizing opportunities for adaptation, connection, and future transformation.
