WATER MANAGEMENT – some key questions

waterpipesgirgaumURBZ

How does water shortage impact the lives of people of diffrent social and income groups in Mumbai?

How do Mumbaikars deal wth this issue in their daily lives? What is their attitude towards it?

What is the city’s strategy at present?

Could the problem be assessed at a micro scale?

What are simple and cheap means for rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse?  Can they be integrated even in very small living spaces?

What would this mean at a city scale?

Thanks for all this very important questions!

I don’t know how the Mumbaikars deal with all these challenges but I would share with you how it’s going on in Recife, Brazil.

I developed a work with the Chico Mendes Community (one of the favela of Recife), about exactly the same questions.

Take a look first at the film ( http://wiki.epfl.ch/copropolis/video1eng ) to understand the situation and afterwards judge the proposition ( http://wiki.epfl.ch/copropolis/ccmeng ) developed in the context of a Master of Architecture in Switzerland.

All the project is based on ECOSAN Concept ( http://wiki.epfl.ch/copropolis/documents/rendu%20final/planche%202%20web%20522k.jpg ) .
It deals with recycling, new market for low income citizen, micro scale connected with quarter scale connected to city scale, City farming and connection informal quarter to the formal city.

Hope it can bring something to the debate.

    Thanks for your reviews

    Julien Ineichen
